Topic 2: Skin Care

By CBSN Founder: Sarah Robertson

I am someone who LOVES trying new products. I’ve spent so much money over the years on hair, skin and beauty/makeup products that I should probably have shares in Sephora & Shoppers Drug Mart. Having trich, I also tend to spend a lot on hats, hair accessories, and anything else that might help cover the damage.

What I plan on doing in these beauty blogs, is help you discover new products/solutions that have worked for either myself or others in the community. Hopefully some of these will work for you! If you want to add any products to my list – please feel free to leave a comment!  Before I get into things, I will let you know that these products work for me but that doesn’t mean they will work for you. I have super sensitive skin (allergies, eczema etc).

TIPS:

  • Do not take long or hot showers – it can make your skin ever drier
  • Don’t over wash your face or use too many products
  • Being gentle with your skin goes a long way
  • If you have dermatillomania, try skipping exfoliating (face/body), it can make things sore and just down right painful
  • Apply cream/skin products directly after you wash your face or get out of the shower

Vaseline:  Yes, petroleum jelly. I have several large tubs hanging around my house. This old fashioned staple is a must when my face/lips feel dry. With no scent or harsh chemicals, this is a safe option for any of you with sensitive skin. I don’t necessarily use Vaseline for the rest of my body, but if it’s good enough for babies, I am sure it does the same job for adults. They come in several sizes so you can throw one in a bag always have something for your lips/hands etc.

Nivea Soft: No special colours or fragrances. Good old plain moisturizer that’s been around for years. This stuff just does the job. I will admit I use this for a while, then get bored and move on. But I always come back to this staple!

LUSH Celestial Facial Moisturizer: I got this bad boy last summer. Holy smokes I cannot say enough about this. It’s made specifically for sensitive skin, obviously being LUSH it’s cruelty free and only has natural products (no chemicals). This face cream smells SO GOOD!!!! It’s like coconut and vanilla mixed into a warm blanket on a winter day. The texture is amazing. A little goes a long way and it just glides right over. Best part – it works!

Let’s be honest. Any LUSH products. Love love love.

Clarisonic Skin Cleanser: I obsessed over getting this last year. I am not going to lie, this is a pricey facial tool. It costs between $150-300 depending on your model. I have the Clarisonic Mia 2 . The difference between this and the first Clarisonic Mia is just the extra speed adjustment… it’s not worth it in my opinion. Overall, this is the top of the line for skin cleansing devices. Don’t be fooled by imitations, this is the real deal. I love it because it removes every single speck of makeup you thought you had removed. It’s also like doing a mini facial every day … Overusing this product can irritate the skin, so please go check out reviews and learn more on the Sephora website.

According to Clarisonic’s website: “Unlike spinning devices, our patented sonic technology works with skin’s natural elasticity, oscillating at a sonic frequency that produces over 300 movements per second. The resulting flexing action created between the outer and inner brushes work to loosen dirt and oil, removing deep-seated impurities from pores and priming skin to better absorb topical treatments”

Philosophy: Purity Made Simple: After reading so many positive reviews on this gentle cleanser, I took a dive and got me a bottle. It is the gentlest product I have used that actually does what it says – HIGHLY recommended. On Philosophy’s website – “Purity is a one-step facial cleanser is an award-winning cleanser that melts away dirt, oil, and makeup. It tones and lightly hydrates in one simple step for skin that feels perfectly clean and comfortably balanced. Formulated for all skin types and gentle enough for the sensitive eye area, it deep cleans pores while natural oil extracts help condition skin”.

Olay Crème (or moisture ribbons) Body Wash: Depending if you live in the US or Canada the name can change – bottle looks the same. Having sensitive skin once again, this is one of the only body washes (next to Aveeno) that I can use. Every scent smells awesome, and they are extremely moisturizing. So if you see these on sale, load up.

EOS lip balms: If you haven’t seen this in a drug store near you, you must be living under a rock! I first got these on a trip to the states close to 5 years ago. I remember buying some to give to my friends as gifts.. they were so excited by these strange little “balls” / “orbs” / “eggs”. Ever since I have been hooked and literally go out of my way to collect every flavor that comes out. I have extremely sensitive lips and the only thing that would work for years was Vaseline. These babies moisturize my lips.. and I mean come on. They’re cute.
