What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-till-UH-May-Nee-AH)

Also know as Hair Pulling Disorder, TTM or TRICH, is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from ones scalp, eyebrows or other areas of the body, resulting in noticeable bald spots/patches. Currently defined as an impulse control disorder.

Who? — People of all ages, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, and socio-economic backgrounds have trichotillomania. Estimated 2-4% of the population suffers in silence because of stigma, embarrassment, low-self esteem, and lack of awareness.

Why? — There is no real reason or cure for Trichotillomania, but several different therapies a long with PEER SUPPORT can have a positive impact on the way a sufferer deals with their disorder.

Trichotillomania was once considered a form of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or self-injurious behavior. Trich is now categorized as “body-focused repetitive behavior” (BFRB). Skin picking & nail biting are also considered BFRB’s.
