CBSN’s BFRB Awareness Week Headquarters

Current statistics say 1 in every 20 people live with a BFRB, whether it be trichotillomania, dermatillomania, or otherwise. Many people with BFRBs never seek professional help, so that number could be even higher.

Everyone can participate in CBSN’s activities, no matter where you’re from or whether you have a BFRB or not.

Although we aim to break the silence and stigma surrounding BFRBs every day of the year, BFRB Awareness Week (October 1st to 7th) is when the BFRB community really comes together. Together, we can make a difference.

Spread the Word. Break the Stigma.

For BFRB Awareness Week 2021, we wanted to focus on hope and recovery for those with BFRBs and the BFRB community. During last year’s awareness week, we asked how everyone felt about recovery, and many felt that it wasn’t possible. We wanted to take this week to not only raise awareness about BFRBs, but also how recovery is possible and attainable.

Join in the conversation by using the hashtag #stepstoBFRBrecovery during October 1st-7th. Be sure to tag our social media accounts—@CanadianBFRB—for a chance to get your images, stories, or videos shared! (Feel free to email us  your stories or message us on any of our social media accounts—we can also share these things anonymously on your behalf!)

Ways To Get Involved

There are so many ways to spread BFRB awareness, even if you’re not ready to be open about your BFRB yourself. Whether you put yourself out there or are more silently supporting the cause, we appreciate all your efforts. YOU make a difference in this community and all that we’ve acheived.

  • Use your platform. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media networks are great tools we can use to share information about BFRBs. Whether you’re telling your story or sharing information, these posts can make a difference.
  • Get the conversation trending. Use the #BFRBweek and #stepstoBFRBrecovery hashtags to get BFRB Awareness Week trending.
  • Start a letter campaign.  Send out letters about BFRBs via email or print them out to give to your local schools, hospitals, or workplaces to help educate people about BFRBs.
  • Submit a guest blog. Whether you are supporting someone with a BFRB or you yourself have a BFRB, sharing your story not only spreads awareness, but can help someone in a similar situation.  Write one on your own blog, submit it to others, and send it to CBSN.  Check out what we’re looking for and guidelines here: Submit a Guest Blog. Check out our Call for Story Submissions for this year.
  • Start a fundraising campaign.  You can raise awareness by asking family, friends, or your community to help by donating. Direct them to CBSN’s website where they can donate an amount of their choosing. All donations go towards CBSN programs and development. As a volunteer-run non-profit organization, we rely on the efforts of the community and really appreciate any and all donations!
